Japan - Fukuoka - A 3-Day Adventure in the City of Lights

Discover the vibrant city of Fukuoka with this exciting 3-day itinerary, blending cultural landmarks, modern attractions, and shopping havens.


Weather: The best times to visit Fukuoka are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when temperatures are mild, ranging from 10°C to 20°C. Summers are hot and humid, while winters are cool but rarely freezing.


Tips:

- Clothing: Dress in layers to stay comfortable in varying temperatures. Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings and evenings.

- Footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll be exploring various sites and shopping areas on foot.

- Transport: Fukuoka has an efficient public transportation system. Consider getting a day pass for unlimited travel on buses and trains.

- Cultural Etiquette: When visiting shrines, be respectful of local customs. Dress modestly and observe proper behavior, such as bowing at the entrance and purification rituals.

Day 1: Hakata Station to Tenjin - A Taste of Fukuoka

My adventure began at Fukuoka Airport, where I hopped on a quick 15-minute ride to Hakata Station. The station itself is a bustling hub, and I immediately felt the energy of the city. I spent the morning exploring the Hakata Ichiban Gai(map), Hankyu Department Store, (map) JR Hakata City (map) a lively shopping street filled with local crafts and snacks. (Cost:around JPY 2,500-4,000)


Lunch was a delightful experience at Rikyu Ox Tongue - Hakata Station Shop, (map) where I indulged in their famous Ox Tongue Curry Set (around JPY 2,000).


After a short 3-minute walk, I checked into the Hotel Nikko Fukuoka, a comfortable and modern hotel with a 24-hour front desk.


The afternoon was dedicated to exploring the city's cultural heart. I visited Kushida Shrine (map) ,a beautiful shrine with a red torii gate and a serene water well. The shrine is a short 10-minute walk from the hotel.

Recommended: Drink Well Water: Visit the well surrounded by three cranes near the shrine building. Legend has it that the water grants longevity and eternal youth.

Explore the large stationary festival floats, such as the one used during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival.


My evening was a mix of shopping and dining. I spent some time at the Tenjin Underground Shopping Mall (map) , a treasure trove of unique finds, and enjoyed a delicious bowl of ramen at Ichiran Tenjin Nishi-dori Shop (map) (around JPY 2,000). The mall is a 15-minute walk from the shrine, and the ramen shop is another 5-minute walk from the mall.


I ended the day with a little souvenir shopping at Don Quijote Tenjin Nishi-dori Shop Open 24 Hours (map) ,an open 24-hour store brimming with everything imaginable. This shop is an 5-minute walk from the ramen shop.


Day 2: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and Fukuoka Tower - A Day of History and Views

Began with a delicious breakfast at Bills Fukuoka (map) (around JPY 3,000). The fluffy pancakes and French toast were a perfect start to the day. Bills Fukuoka is a 12-minute ride from the hotel.


Next, I embarked on a 43-minute train journey to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine (map), a beautiful shrine dedicated to the god of scholarship. The shrine is a serene oasis, with plum blossoms, a pond, and a charming bridge.

Recommended: Colorful Amulets - Visitors can take home colorful amulets for good fortune


After exploring the shrine, I enjoyed a satisfying lunch at Yakiniku Makijiro Yakiniku Buffet (map) (around JPY 4,000), a 42-minute ride from the shrine.


The afternoon was all about breathtaking views at Fukuoka Tower (map)(BuyTicket: Here). The SKY View 123 observation deck offered panoramic vistas of the city. The tower is a 36-minute ride from the buffet.

For dinner, I savored a delightful sushi experience at Gourd Sushi (map) (around JPY 3,000), a 37-minute ride from the tower.


My evening concluded with a stroll through Canal City Hakata (map), a vibrant shopping mall with a mesmerizing water show. The mall is a 10-minute walk from the sushi restaurant.


Day 3: Uminonakamichi Seaside Park and JR Hakata City - A Farewell to Fukuoka

My final day in Fukuoka began with a delicious breakfast at Brioche Dorée French Restaurant (map) (around JPY 2,000). The croissant sandwiches and coffee were a delightful way to start the day. The restaurant is a 12-minute ride from the hotel.



Next, I ventured to Uminonakamichi Seaside Park (map), a sprawling park with stunning ocean views, a beautiful garden, and a variety of activities. The park is a 49-minute ride from the restaurant.

Recommended: Rent a bicycle to explore, View seasonal flowers, Enjoy the water park,etc


After a relaxing afternoon at the park, I enjoyed a final shopping spree at JR Hakata City (map), a bustling shopping center with a wide selection of stores and restaurants. The shopping center is a 44-minute ride from the park.


For my last meal in Fukuoka, I indulged in a delicious dinner at Snow Raku (map) (around JPY 2,000), a restaurant on the 10th floor of JR Hakata City.

Recommended: Hakata Ramen (Tonkotsu pork bone broth ramen), Motsunabe (Beef or pork intestines hot pot), Mizutaki (Chicken hotpot)


My Fukuoka adventure ended at the airport, filled with memories of delicious food, stunning sights, and the warmth of the city. The airport is a 23-minute ride from the shopping center.
